NDIS Funding and Plan

19 June 2024

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers different types of plans to cater to varying needs and preferences of participants. Here’s an overview of the main types of NDIS plans:

1. Core Supports

  • Purpose: To cover everyday activities and personal care needs.
  • Examples: Assistance with personal care, domestic tasks (e.g., cleaning, cooking), community participation, and transport.
Flexibility: Participants have some flexibility in how they use this funding, allowing for adjustments based on changing needs.

2. Capital Supports

  • Purpose: To provide funding for major investments and long-term needs.
  • Examples: Assistive technology (like wheelchairs or communication devices), home modifications, and vehicle modifications.
Flexibility: Generally less flexible; these supports are more structured and usually involve specific quotes or approvals.

3. Capacity Building Supports

  • Purpose: To help participants build skills and capabilities to achieve their goals and increase independence.
  • Examples: Therapy services (such as occupational therapy or physiotherapy), support coordination, and training or education.
Flexibility: More flexible in terms of service providers and how the funds are used, aimed at enhancing personal development and long-term outcomes.

4. NDIS Plan Types

  • Self-Managed Plan: Participants manage their own NDIS funds. This option offers more flexibility but requires the participant to handle administration and compliance.
  • Plan Managed: Participants have a plan manager who handles the financial aspects of their NDIS plan, including paying providers and managing budgets.
  • Agency Managed: The NDIS manages the plan and pays the service providers directly. Participants work with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or planner to implement their plan.
